A CLINICAL AND HISTOPATHOLOGICAL STUDY ON THE IDIOPATHIC GINGIVAL FIBROMATOSIS
Kim Hyun-Sub

Choi Yeoung-Wook
Abstract
A male patient, 5-year old, who had shown firm, enlarged gingival tissue that covers most of the anatomical crown of the mandibular and maxilla teeth clinically, was examed histopathologically.
The clinical features of the gingival tissue showed normal color and stippled, non-painful, and free from hemorrage, and histopathological findings showed a moderate hyperplasia with hyperkeratosis and elongation of the rete peg in the epithelial
layer,
marked increased and thickening of the collagenous bundles in the connective tissue stroma in the connective tissue layer.
According to the clinical and histological features, final diagnosis was established as the idiopathic gingival fibromatosis.
Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis is a massive hyperplasia of the gingiva in young people which is rather rare, the increased tissue mass is primarily the results of a thickening of the collagenous bundles in the connective tissue stroma, and
treated by
surgical excision.
The present patient¡¯s chief complaint was subsided by surgical gingivectomy and gingivoplasty, but continuous careful maintenance care was recommended.
